It didn’t take long to get lost inside this 13th Century Castle.
Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, Eileen Donan was unexpectedly empty on this day. The Scottish highlands unsurprisingly, was terribly dreich when we visited – which only just added to the spectacular drama of this place. An iconic castle, I’d seen her plenty of times in films and always wanted to visit and today was the lucky day. This is what I saw – a mysterious, melancholic old girl, steeped in history and immaculately kept. Roaming the rooms was like the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure; there were clues all over the place – strangely placed objects, newspaper clippings, letters, photos, I wanted to touch and look under everything. But I was being ridiculous, I didn’t want to get kicked out, and obviously all paths led to the exit sign.
